Most intriguing is how much it also draws from multiple titles in the series The L’il Oink trophy in the Wii U version particularly floored me. Smash has certainly not ignored its popularity Paper Mario’s gotten increasing numbers of trophies in every installment, culminating in a stage for the 3DS version. It also falls in line with Smash, which has historically and wildly played with fan expectations, but without malice. The playful subversiveness of the series, the first three titles in particular, are often seen as a bit of a counteragent to the normalcy of the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario games have been struggling more as of late, and they havn’t found a powerful, immediate energy really since Galaxy (though some games have come close, Mario Kart 8 in particular). Just imagine the Boxing Ring aliases: “the Envelope Executioner,” “The Plane of Pain,” “Shooting Star Slugger,” “The 2D Tornado,” “Flat-Footed Fighter,” and that’s not even counting “the Great Gonzales.”įinally, and most importantly, the series is not only good, but fairly prominent as well. It’d be a form of transformation that’s never been done, and while I’m not sure how well it can be handled (it at least wouldn’t be as complicated as the Zelda-Sheik switch), it would be interesting both visually and competitively. Most exciting, though, would be moves taken from the Thousand-Year Door’s “paper” abilities, allowing him to fold himself into a plane, ship, or tube. He could use varied hammer swings or items, or even exploit the in-game crowd to power up.
He can use his partners, like firing the shells of a Koopa teammate as a controlled projectile or dropping explosive helpers as time bombs. One of the things that makes Paper Mario so appealing is that his origins give him a wealth of inspiration from which to draw. The arts and crafts style of the character is also great, and the paper theme could be exaggerated to differentiate him from Mr. While Sticker Star was disappointingly rote, the series as a whole is incredibly imaginative, with unique worlds and fantastic writing (the English translation in particular, courtesy of Nintendo of America’s “Treehouse”). Pros: This guy’s definitely at the top of many fans’ lists, and for good reason. It makes sense: beyond being the most iconic and constant character, the variety of ways in which the games utilized the paper concept entirely revolve around him. While the four games together have a variety of wonderful eccentrics, from an insecure transgender demon to a drunk Bob-Omb sailor to a Goomba named after and inspired by the man who killed so many of his kind, the series’ interpretation of Mario is universally the focus among supporters. Since then, Paper Mario has spawned three successful sequels and charmed audiences the world over.
Released in 2000 in Japan and a year later worldwide, what started as an unofficial sequel to Squaresoft’s Super Mario RPG became a wonderful role playing game in its own right. The Character: Mario’s alternate pulp form hailing from his eponymous sub-series.
